Singing Through Change has a mission to help educate and tell the stories of women and those who experience voice changes in relation to “midlife, menopause, and beyond.” This book is STUFFED with the science necessary to help provide a framework through which they then BEAUTIFULLY weave the experience of over 50 women who tell their stories of voice change. I could quote about every other sentence in this book. It’s not only a resource for me as an SLP who works with singers, but someone who is close to women and those who will experience some of these changes themselves throughout life. When people ask me - “what are the things I need to do to learn more about voice?!” This! This is a great one!

Singing Through Change is a beacon of light for all women who sing and for whom singing is important. It provides information, objective data, resources, suggestions, and many individual anecdotes from women who have openly shared their experiences singing while going through peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause. It fills a gaping hole in our knowledge and opens a path to new dialog on this vital topic. Every expert in all the related voice disciplines needs to know what is in this excellent book.

Singing Through Change is a must read for anyone who is a singer, voice teacher, singing specialist, or medical professional. What an incredible resource for all those involved with voice in any way. As a practicing Otolaryngologist I regret not having information such as this early on in my practice. ... I appreciate women more than I ever have after reading this book, not just pertaining to voice, but to the obstacles in all aspects of life. Perhaps this should be a must read for all men.

In Singing Through Change, readers will find a bounty of information which, for the first time, summarizes current research on adult female voice change, while allowing a glimpse into the lives of women who have faced the results of adult female voice change. Written in an accessible style, the book provides case studies which enable a better understanding of adult female voice change and its effects physically, vocally, emotionally, psychologically and socially. This book will be an invaluable resource to singers, voice teachers, choral directors and any woman who loves to sing!

That the book, Singing Through Change: Women's Voices in Midlife, Menopause, and Beyond, addresses a largely underserved population in our singing community would be an understatement. Written by women, for women, about women, this compelling and easy read fills a significant void in the professional literature about the changes and challenges female singers may experience during this specific time in their lives.

A thorough, thoughtful, and compassionate look into the complexities surrounding the singing voice for women during midlife and the menopausal transition, interwoven with stories that inform, encourage and inspire us to keep singing. This will no doubt be a tremendous resource for the singing and medical communities for years to come.

If you are a singer who has or had a uterus -- or if you work with such singers, including choir directors and voice teachers, but also medical professionals -- you need to read this book! Incredibly well researched, with a wealth of information on the effects of hormones on the voice, as well as issues surrounding vocal injuries, illness, and aging. A lot of valuable information in an easily readable format, with pages and pages of notes and further resources at the end. HIGHLY recommended!
Debbie Grossman, voice teacher and singer
